Florida Irrigation: How Much Should I Water My Lawn?

If your lawn is green and beautiful, then you have probably already mastered the tricky techniques of proper irrigation. On the other hand, if you struggle to find the perfect balance (avoiding over or under-watering), then you’re not alone. Most Florida homeowners will struggle to find the right amount. When you do get your lawn looking like a fresh, green carpet, then you might be faced with water restrictions from the government.

General guidelines for irrigation are as follows:

Spring: 1-2 times a week for a total of 1.0 to 1.5 inches per week
Summer: 2-3 times a week for a total of 2.0 to 2.5 inches per week
Fall: 1-2 times a week for a total of 1.0 to 1.5 inches per week
Winter: 1 time a week for a total of 0.5 to 1.0 inches per week

Set your sprinkler system for the early morning, so the grass will dry quickly. Evening waterings often leave the grass wet for too long and invite fungus to take root. These recommendations are appropriate for an established lawn in South Florida.

Remember, new lawns and landscaping will need extra water to get established. You may also need to vary your irrigation schedule if the amount of rainfall is different from seasonal averages, or if you have special considerations like extremely sandy soil or heavy tree cover.

In our profession, we are always respectful and responsible for the environmental impact of lawn irrigation. A professional system can reduce improper water usage. Upgrades like rain sensors will allow for more precise control. Sprinklers kept in good repair will reduce waste from leaks or broken sprinkler heads.

Consider using a professional irrigation system that will benefit both your lawn and Florida’s environment. It’s the best way to be sure you’re getting the optimum results for your lawn.
